Welcome to Green Pages!

Thank you for stopping by!

Bio Pic 2I'm Jeff Hix, your Green Pages host and small business sustainability consultant, and this site is your guide to greening your home and office.

In addition to over 20 years' experience helping firms reduce, control, and gain visibility into their overhead expenses, I also served from 2004 - 2008 on the Board of Directors of the Dogwood Alliance, the only organization in the South holding corporations accountable for the impact of their industrial foresty practices on our forests and our communities.   In 2007, I served as the organizations' Acting Executive Director, and in 2008 as Chair of the Board.   In 2007 and 2008, I also co-directed the first Earth Day festivals the City of Atlanta held since 1995, and joined Mayor Shirley Franklin in her efforts in building a greener Atlanta.

I first learned about the Dogwood Alliance in 2000 after watching a segment on the McNeil Lehrer News Hour highlighting one of the most successful campaigns the environmental movement has witnessed in recent memory when Dogwood Alliance teamed up with San Francisco-based ForestEthics in creating The Paper Campaign to protect forests by working in the marketplace to change the way paper is made in the US.  Having been intimately involved in the office supply industry since the late 1980's, it caught my attention that these passionate, enterprising organizations were singlehandedly transforming the office supply industry and simultaneously achieving lasting protection for Southern Forests by targeting the largest retail paper sellers in the US - office super stores like Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, and other companies who had long been my competitors.   With their unique combination of grassroots organizing and inside-the-boardroom negotiation, Dogwood Alliance brought eco-consciousness and corporate responsibility to an industry that had long ignored its widespread environmental impact.    To learn more about their successful campaigns and victories in transforming the Office Supply Industry, click here (Dogwood Alliance and the Office Supply Industry).

While organizations such as the Dogwood Alliance are transforming the paper and packaging industries and creating real and lasting protection for Southern forests, the question we ask ourselves is ... what can we do?   Well, one way is to make a donation to support these efforts, and the other is to examine the way we purchase and use the products in our home and business and make better decisions about the things we consume as well as the footprint we leave as we go about our daily lives.

And here at Green Pages, you can do both!

This site is dedicated to helping people and companies reduce costs while simultaneously reducing their ecological footprint.  And a percentage of every purchase made from this site goes directly to helping the Dogwood Alliance and their important work.

One of the biggest myths in green purchasing today is that it costs more money to be ecologically sensitive.   This is simply not true!  The wonderful thing about buying green is you can save money and save the environment at the same time!   Consider that:

  • Products that are reusable, refillable, more durable or repairable create less waste and are more cost-effective in the long run than disposable or single-use products.
  • Manufacturing recycled products uses less energy than goods made from virgin materials.  Buying recycled products keeps recycling programs going and saves natural resources.
  • Using energy-efficient and water-conserving products saves money and resources.

So when you think green, think of saving forests and trees ... Beautiful Forest

and think also of saving a bundle of these!   Dollar
